Victoria’s festive season is back — and with it, one of our most beloved traditions: Carols by Candlelight.
Whether you’re heading to the iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl or settling in at a cosy community event, there’s nothing quite like singing Christmas classics under the stars.
To help you enjoy every magical moment, here are our top 10 tips for a smooth, stress-free Carols by Candlelight night out in 2025. 🎶✨
1. Plan Your Arrival Early
Carols events fill up fast, especially the big Melbourne gathering. Aim to arrive at least an hour early to score a great spot and ease into the festive atmosphere.
If you’re heading into the city, public transport is your best friend — trams and trains run frequently, and parking is always tight.
2. Pack a Picnic
A picnic + carols = perfection.
Bring your favourite festive nibbles — think cheeses, fruit, sandwiches, and Christmas treats.
Don’t forget reusable cutlery, napkins, and a small rubbish bag so you can leave your spot clean.
3. Choose Comfy Seating
You’ll be sitting for a while, so plan for comfort. Picnic rugs, low chairs, or cushions work beautifully.
If you do bring chairs, make sure they’re low-profile so you’re not blocking the view behind you.
4. Dress for Any Forecast
This is Victoria… anything can happen.
Check the weather, wear layers, and pack a light jacket or blanket for later in the evening. If you’re arriving early, don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
5. Light Up the Night (Safely)
Swap out real candles for battery-operated ones — safer, reusable, and still just as magical.
Fairy lights and glow sticks are a fun bonus for kids (and big kids).
6. Bring the Essentials
A lightweight daypack with the basics will save your night. Include:
Sunscreen & insect repellent
Water bottle
Tissues or wipes
Portable phone charger
Hand sanitiser
7. Get Festive
Carols are 100% more fun when you lean into the spirit.
Santa hats, reindeer antlers, Christmas tees — go for it. Bring a few fun props if you’re planning photos; this is peak festive-season joy.
8. Prep for Kids
Tiny humans in tow?
Bring snacks, colouring books, small toys, or bubbles to keep them busy before the carols begin.
Noise-reduction headphones are great for little ones who find loud music overwhelming.
9. Check the Program
Every event has its own schedule. Look up the run sheet before you go so you know the best time for food runs or bathroom breaks — and so you don’t miss your favourite carol.
10. Leave No Trace
Help keep Victoria’s parks and venues beautiful.
Bring a couple of spare bags for rubbish and aim to take everything you brought in.
It’s an easy way to give back to the places we love.
⭐ Bonus Tip: Make a Night of It
Many Carols events offer extra entertainment, kids activities, food trucks, or nearby Christmas light displays.
Arrive early or stay late for the full festive experience.
