    Fresh Air Vibes

Alpine National Park is the largest national park in Victoria (over 646,000ha) and connects with national parks in New South Wales and the ACT to protect most of the Australian Alps.

This magnificent national park contains 10 of the 11 highest mountains in the state and boasts stunningly beautiful alpine topography with dramatic mountain landscapes, wild rivers, impressive escarpments, snow gum forests and open grasslands known as high plains.

There are many diverse vegetation types, the most significant being alpine and subalpine communities. Snow gums and alpine ash trees heavily forest the mountains. Wildflowers, heathlands, alpine herb fields and snowplains, mossbeds and snowpatch communities grow in the higher exposed areas too harsh for trees to survive. Visit in spring to see carpets of wildflowers including snow daisies and bright yellow billy buttons.

A great way to experience the park is to drive the Great Alpine Road Touring Route which winds through the heart of the Victorian Alps on the highest-altitude road in Victoria, and offers panoramic views as far as the eye can see.

The mountains also provide a stunning setting for a huge range of outdoor and adventure activities. In winter when snow covers the High Country, people flock to the hills to partake in snow sports. In spring and summer, when the warmer weather is ideal for bushwalking and four-wheel driving, wildflowers cover the slopes and high plains in brilliant displays. Fly-fishing for trout in the mountain streams is also popular. For the more adventurous there are also opportunities to try mountain biking or horse riding along old mountain cattle trails, rip through rapids on whitewater rafting trips, or soar on wind currents on a hang glider or paraglider.

Base yourself at one of the alpine resorts within the park such as Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain, Falls Creek or Mount Buller, or stay in the surrounding valleys at towns such as Bright, Mount Beauty or Mansfield.

NOTE: Selected tracks throughout the Alpine National Park may be closed for repairs or maintenance, or subject to seasonal closures. Please check the Parks Victoria website for the latest updates.

We acknowledge the First Peoples throughout Victoria and their ongoing connection to the land and waters.

For over 60,000 years they have cared for Country and preserved our beautiful landscapes. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present.

We are grateful for their custodianship, their knowledge and their resilience.

We would also like to acknowledge our First Peoples as Australia’s original storytellers. Their rich storytelling inspires us to share how special Melbourne and Victoria is with the world.
