    Local Vibes

Experience life as it was in historic Walhalla. Once one of Australia’s richest towns and home to over 4000 gold seekers, this sleepy mountainside town is now frozen in time and is home to only 20 residents. Walk through the lovingly restored centre full of heritage buildings, try your hand at panning for gold, or take a tour of the surrounding area. When travelling in Walhalla, you will be visiting the lands of the Gunaikurnai People.

    History and culture
Revel in the history that followed the discovery of Cohen’s Reef, a three-kilometre vein of gold running through Walhalla. Learn about the tough lives of miners, pan for gold down at Stringers Creek, and then explore the old hotels, shops, school and churches built in the 19th century when the town was at its peak.

    Railways and tours
Take a ride on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. Enjoy the vibrant autumn trees, the beautiful Stringers Creek Gorge and colourful spring wildflowers. For something a little spookier, take a ghost tour at the old cemetery on the hill.

    Mountain hideaways
Spend a weekend in one of the many B&Bs in and around Walhalla. Enjoy open fires and spectacular views of the valley. Whether you’re in town for a couple’s retreat or family getaway, you’ll find plenty of accommodation options, from basic rooms through to luxury digs.

We acknowledge the First Peoples throughout Victoria and their ongoing connection to the land and waters.

For over 60,000 years they have cared for Country and preserved our beautiful landscapes. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present.

We are grateful for their custodianship, their knowledge and their resilience.

We would also like to acknowledge our First Peoples as Australia’s original storytellers. Their rich storytelling inspires us to share how special Melbourne and Victoria is with the world.
