Head to the heart of the Mallee to explore the town of Sea Lake. Located in Victoria’s wheat-belt, the town makes an ideal base for exploring nearby Lake Tyrrell, and the Silo Art Trail. Drop into the recently refurbished Royal Hotel for a hearty pub feed, glamp on a private farm and take in the vibrant colours of a stunning Wimmera Mallee sunset.

When travelling to Sea Lake, you will be visiting the lands of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk peoples of the Wotjobaluk Nations.

An ancient salt lake

7 kilometres north of Sea Lake is Victoria’s largest salt lake, covering 20,860 hectares. The reflective surface of the shallow, ancient Lake Tyrrell makes for epic viewing, particularly around sunrise and sunset, and there is evidence of ongoing Indigenous occupation, going back 45,000 years. The lake can be accessed via the Calder Highway at any time of the day or night. Jump on a Lake Tyrrell Sunset Tour for a guided visit, with a knowledgeable local operator.

Off-road antics

The Sea Lake Mallee Rally is the oldest currently running off-road event in Australia. Competitors battle it out over four or five laps of the gruelling 85 kilometre track around Lake Tyrrell, as they make a dash for the coveted title. Held over the June long weekend, the annual event kicks off with a Friday Night Spectacular, featuring live bands, children’s rides, static displays of off-road vehicles and fireworks.

See Silo Art

Sea Lake’s silo is the latest addition to Australia’s largest outdoor gallery, the Silo Art Trail. The Space in Between is the work of street artists Drapl and The Zookeeper, and pays homage to nearby Lake Tyrrell and the Boorong People, with their deep and rich connection to both the night sky and the 120,000 year old salt lake.

Acknowledgement of Country

Let’s Go Victoria acknowledges the First Peoples throughout Victoria and their ongoing connection to the land and waters.

For over 60,000 years they have cared for Country and preserved our beautiful landscapes. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present. We are grateful for their custodianship, their knowledge and their resilience.

We would also like to acknowledge our First Peoples as Australia’s original storytellers. Their rich storytelling inspires us to share how special Melbourne and Victoria is with the world.
