    Fresh Air Vibes

For many visitors, The Grotto leaves a lasting impression—its serene beauty contrasting the rugged, wild energy of the surrounding coastline. This unique rock formation, part cave and part blowhole, offers a tranquil glimpse into the forces that have shaped the Great Ocean Road.

At low tide, a fine mist from waves crashing against the distant shore drifts over the lower viewing area, while sunlight dances through it, creating shimmering rainbows. The still, clear water inside the grotto reflects the sky and rocky walls, providing a moment of calm before the open ocean roars just beyond.

It’s not hard to see why The Grotto is such a favourite spot for photographers and nature lovers. The natural framing of the archway, the contrast between the tranquil rock pool and the restless ocean, and the way light plays on the water make it one of the most magical sights along this dramatic coastline.

    A Word of Caution

While The Grotto feels like a peaceful escape, it’s important to remember that the ocean is unpredictable here. The low rock shelf that leads to the pool can be quickly overtaken by waves, sometimes approaching silently from deep water. The viewing wall is there for your protection, and it’s wise to stay well back from the edge, especially during high tide or rough conditions.

We acknowledge the First Peoples throughout Victoria and their ongoing connection to the land and waters.

For over 60,000 years they have cared for Country and preserved our beautiful landscapes. We pay our respects to Elders, past and present.

We are grateful for their custodianship, their knowledge and their resilience.

We would also like to acknowledge our First Peoples as Australia’s original storytellers. Their rich storytelling inspires us to share how special Melbourne and Victoria is with the world.
